Gongendo | Ishigaki, Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property, Oldest Yaeyama Shrine
Standing adjacent to Chorinji in Ishigaki’s town center, “Gongendo” is Yaeyama’s oldest shrine architecture, founded in 1614 (Keicho 19) at the same time as Chorinji. It’s a sacred hall enshrining Kumano Gongen (the three Kumano deities), and was designated a nationally designated Important Cultural Property in 1981.
While many traditional structures on the main island were lost in the Battle of Okinawa, this is a precious Ryukyu shrine building, the only one remaining on Ishigaki, having escaped the flames of war. As the beginning of temple-and-shrine construction in Yaeyama, it’s a special place that, together with Chorinji, has borne the center of Yaeyama’s faith culture. In this article, we’ll fully cover Gongendo’s charm, history, highlights and access.
What Kind of Place Is Gongendo? Yaeyama’s Oldest Shrine Architecture
Gongendo is a small hall adjacent to Chorinji in Ishigaki’s town center, one of the Eight Ryukyu Shrines. In 1614, prompted by the Satsuma Domain advising King Sho Nei of the Ryukyu royal government to build temples and shrines, it was founded together with Chorinji.
“Gongen” refers to an incarnation in which a Buddha appears in the form of a deity to save sentient beings. What is enshrined at Gongendo is the three Kumano deities (Kumano Gongen). It’s a precious religious structure that tells the history of how Honshu’s Kumano faith was transmitted to the Ryukyus and worshipped in the land of Yaeyama.
The only shrine architecture remaining in Okinawa Prefecture
Due to the Battle of Okinawa, many traditional structures on Okinawa’s main island were lost. Gongendo on Ishigaki, which escaped the flames of war, is a precious survivor. This is the reason it was designated a nationally designated Important Cultural Property in 1981.
The distinctive atmosphere, fusing Ryukyu architectural style with Kumano faith, is a rare cultural heritage you can never see elsewhere. As “the only shrine architecture remaining in Okinawa Prefecture,” it’s a spot well worth visiting.

A precious wooden building in Ryukyu architectural style
Gongendo is a wooden building in Ryukyu architectural style. It was completely destroyed by the Great Meiwa Tsunami of 1771, but was rebuilt in 1786, and after major restoration work in 2008 it’s kept in its present form. The fusion of Okinawa’s distinctive red-tile roof with shrine architecture is a singular presence found nowhere else.
