Tomisaki Kannondo | Ishigaki's No.1 New-Year Shrine Visit, Kannonzaki, History & Access

2026/6/21

Quietly standing on the hilly land of Kannonzaki in southwestern Ishigaki, “Tomisaki Kannondo” is a venerable temple founded in 1742. Usually a quiet hall, at year-end and New Year it bustles so much that long queues form, as Ishigaki’s No. 1 first-shrine-visit spot, drawing over 10,000 people in a single day.

It’s a venerable place enshrining a Kannon that watches over safe voyages and good health, and the quiet approach surrounded by Ryukyu pines and fukugi tree rows is a special space where you can feel the air of a Japanese sacred precinct, different from Okinawa’s utaki faith. It’s also ideal as a spot for a circuit tour combined with Fusaki Beach, Kannonzaki and Tojin Baka. In this article, we’ll fully cover Tomisaki Kannondo’s charm, its history, access and first-visit information.

What Kind of Place Is Tomisaki Kannondo? One of Ishigaki’s Oldest Kannon Halls

Tomisaki Kannondo is a temple located on the hilly land of Kannonzaki, which surrounds the southern side of Nagura Bay in southwestern Ishigaki. It began in 1742 (Kanpo 2) when the official Iriomote Naoka dedicated three Kannon statues praying for safe voyages, and it boasts a history of over 280 years.

In 1983 (Showa 58) it was designated an Ishigaki City Historic Site, and locally it has been beloved as Ishigaki sightseeing’s No. 1 first-visit spot. The grounds are a quiet environment surrounded by Ryukyu pines and fukugi tree rows, and proceeding down an approach lined with offered lanterns, a red-tiled shrine surrounded by woods appears—a place with a mysterious atmosphere.

Tomisaki Kannondo’s History | The Moving Tale of Iriomote Naoka and His Wife Manaru

The origin of Tomisaki Kannondo holds a moving tale woven from conjugal love and strange fate.

The official Iriomote Naoka, returning to Ishigaki after finishing official duties for the Shuri royal government, met a great storm, and his ship was swept all the way to Fuzhou, China. There, by chance, he reunited with a Chinese person he had once cared for in Yaeyama. From that Chinese person, two Kannon statues were given so that Naoka could return safely to the island.

Meanwhile, on the island, his wife Manaru visited Misaki Utaki and Gongendo every night, praying for her husband’s safety. Moved by her figure, the head priest of Chorinji gave Manaru one Kannon statue.

Perhaps owing also to the divine power of those Kannon statues, Naoka was able to return to the island safely. Devoutly worshipping the three Kannon statues, after several relocations, the Kannon hall was built at the present Tomisaki plain in 1742.

This moving tale connecting Ishigaki and China is still handed down as the origin of the Kannon hall, and the episodes of “conjugal love,” “safe return” and “strange fate” touch the hearts of many worshippers.

Tomisaki Kannondo’s Highlights

A southern-style red-tiled Kannon hall

At the back of the grounds is a hall with Okinawa’s distinctive red-tile roof, where three Kannon statues are enshrined. Peeking inside the hall, you can confirm the three Kannon statues firmly enshrined. It’s a distinctive figure fusing an Okinawan build with the air of a Japanese sacred precinct.

Animal-shaped stone lanterns

Near the Kannon hall entrance, various animal-shaped stone lanterns line up. From the fine decoration, you can feel particular care and strictness. It’s a space you can enjoy as a photo spot too.

A first-visit of over 10,000 people a day

The usually quiet Kannon hall transforms during the year-end countdown and first shrine visit. Over 10,000 worshippers visit in a single day, forming a huge queue with a wait of nearly an hour to reach the hall. With its popularity drawing worshippers even from Honshu and Okinawa’s main island, it’s a year-end-and-New-Year tradition of Ishigaki.
