Ishigaki 1-Day Drive Model Course | Kabira Bay, Tamatorizaki & Yonehara Beach Guide
To make the most of Ishigaki in a single day, the recommended choice is the classic drive course: rent a car and tour the island clockwise. Starting from town, taking in the east-coast scenery, the northern lighthouse and the west-coast beaches—if you set off at 8 a.m., you can cover Ishigaki’s main sights in one day, sunset-viewing included.
“Where should I go on my first Ishigaki trip?” “I only have one day but want to sightsee efficiently.” “I want to see both Kabira Bay and Hirakubozaki Lighthouse.”—the one-day drive course introduced here solves all those worries at once. Precisely because this is an island where a rental car is essential, building the route along the best flow shapes how satisfying the trip is.
In this article, we introduce in chronological order a self-contained one-day drive model course that even first-time Ishigaki travelers won’t get lost on. We’ll fully cover the time needed, lunch spots, parking info, the highlights of each spot, and recommended points for families and couples.

One-Day Drive Model Course (Chronological)
8:00 Depart from town / hotel-front pickup
Finish breakfast at your Ishigaki town hotel and set off at 8. If you rent the car the day before at Ishigaki Mirais Rent-a-Car near Painushima Ishigaki Airport, you can be picked up in front of the hotel for a smooth start. With free airport pickup, renting on arrival day and driving the next day is also recommended.
For breakfast, use the hotel buffet, or enjoy an Okinawan breakfast near Euglena Mall in town. Before departing, prepare drinking water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a towel. Gas stations are more plentiful and cheaper in town, so the iron rule is to stop at a station first, then start heading north.
8:30 Tamatorizaki Observation Deck
Head up the east coast to the first scenic spot, Tamatorizaki Observation Deck. After about a 30-minute coastal drive from town, a panorama woven from blue sea and a green peninsula spreads out. Stay 20–30 minutes.
From the free parking lot, it’s about a 3-minute walk to the deck. Climb the paved path to reach a scenic point overlooking both the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea. Early morning has fewer people and is ideal for photos. The hibiscus-lined path is a photogenic, tropical spot too. There are restrooms and vending machines, so use it as a final break before the northern drive.
9:30 Hirakubozaki Lighthouse
Head further north to Hirakubozaki Lighthouse, Ishigaki’s northernmost point. The coastal drive on the way is spectacular, with many photo spots. Around the lighthouse, a 360-degree sea view spreads out. Stay 30 minutes.
The contrast of the pure-white lighthouse, deep-blue sea and green meadow is among Ishigaki’s finest scenery. If you’re lucky you may see sea turtles or black Wagyu cattle—a peaceful northernmost landscape. It’s often windy, so be careful your hat isn’t blown away. From the parking lot to the lighthouse is about a 5-minute walk on gravel underfoot, so sneakers are reassuring. From the deck you can see the coastlines on both sides of the peninsula—a magnificent view where you feel the curve of the earth.
10:30 To the west coast via the north
Pass through the northern mountain road toward Yonehara Beach on the west coast. Drop by the Yonehara Yaeyama Palm Grove on the way (15 minutes). At this stand of Yaeyama palms designated a national natural monument, you can feel the subtropical-jungle atmosphere. The path where centuries-old palms cover the sky feels like wandering into the world of Jurassic Park.
11:00 Snorkeling at Yonehara Beach
At Yonehara Beach, coral reefs spread just a few meters from the shoreline. Easily try snorkeling with rental gear. Stay 60–90 minutes.
At the rental shop in front of the beach, a mask, snorkel, fins and life-jacket set rents for about ¥1,500–2,500. Colorful tropical fish like clownfish, sapphire damselfish and pink anemonefish swim in schools—a moving experience for kids and adults alike.
However, Yonehara Beach has some spots with fairly strong currents, so always wear a life jacket and take care not to go too far out. Showers (about ¥300), changing rooms and restrooms are provided, so you can get ready for afternoon sightseeing before setting off.
12:30 Lunch & glass boat at Kabira Bay
Head to Michelin three-star Kabira Bay. After enjoying a Yaeyama soba lunch at an eatery near the bay, observe the underwater world by glass boat. Stay 2 hours.
For lunch, Ishigaki-beef soba or Yaeyama soba is recommended. There are many cafés overlooking the bay, and a meal with a view is exceptional. After eating, ride the glass boat (about ¥1,300, 30 minutes) and observe coral and tropical fish through the glass bottom. If you’re lucky you’ll meet sea turtles too.
Note that swimming is prohibited at Kabira Bay, so you can’t swim in it. Still, the scenery woven from the emerald-green sea and the silhouettes of uninhabited islets is a highlight of Ishigaki sightseeing. The observatory is a scenic point overlooking the bay. Parking is paid (about ¥300–500), but as a tourist site, just use it.
14:30 Scenic photos at Uganzaki
Head to Uganzaki, the scenic cape at the west coast’s westernmost point. Sheer cliffs and a reef view spread out. Stay 30 minutes.
A white lighthouse, rugged cliffs, an emerald-green reef—photogenic scenery spreads out. In April–May it’s also a famous spot where Easter lilies bloom in profusion. The sunset seen from here is superb too, but on a one-day course, enjoy it as a waypoint. Parking is free, about a 5-minute walk to the observation point. The railing at the cliff edge is low, so don’t let go of children’s hands.
15:30 Ishigaki Limestone Cave or Sukuji Beach
Two choices depending on your energy:
- Active types: more ocean play at Sukuji Beach. Shallow and safe for families.
- Relaxed types: cool underground exploring at the Ishigaki Limestone Cave. Comfortable at 20°C.
Stay 60 minutes.
The Ishigaki Limestone Cave has a ¥1,200 admission and lets you stroll about 660 m of fantastical cave interior. With formations like the “Totoro stalactite” and giant-clam fossils, it’s a popular spot to feel nature’s mystery. It’s also valued as a refuge on rainy or hot days. Sukuji Beach is shallow with calm waves—ideal for swimming with families.
17:00 The view at Banna Park
Before returning to town, head to the observatory at Banna Park. A scenic point overlooking Ishigaki town and the sea. Stay 30 minutes.
From the summit observatory at about 230 m elevation, you can see all the way to Ishigaki town, ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort, Ibaruma Bay and Taketomi Island. Visiting during the magic hour before sunset, you get a view where the sky and sea are dyed gold. The park also has playgrounds and a barbecue area, so families with kids might arrive a little early to play on the equipment.
18:00 Dinner while watching the sunset
Return to town and cap the day with the sunset at Maesato Beach or an Ishigaki-beef dinner at Euglena Mall. The eatery on the second floor of the Ishigaki Public Market is also recommended. You can enjoy fresh seafood and island cuisine. Return the car near the hotel, or if you’ll use it the next day too, park it at the hotel and rest.

Cautions for the One-Day Drive
Depart early
Departing late can mean not making it in time for sunset viewing. An 8 a.m. departure is ideal. After 9, the spots start to crowd with tourists, so the merit of an early start is large. Especially in high seasons like Golden Week and Obon, Kabira Bay’s parking can fill up, so it’s wise to pass through in the early morning.
Refuel in town
The Hirakubozaki Lighthouse area in the north has few gas stations. Fill the tank in town before setting off. Stations in the north and remote-island areas often close at 5–6 p.m., so take care. For refueling at return, the smooth flow is to do it in town before heading to the airport.
Hydration and sun protection
An island drive uses more energy than you’d expect. Don’t forget water, sunscreen and a hat. Keeping plenty of drinking water in the car saves money by not relying on each site’s kiosk. Reapply sunscreen every 2–3 hours.
Watch for animals
On the northern mountain roads, wildlife such as the crested serpent eagle, Yaeyama box turtle and goats may cross the road. Take special care from evening into night. Keep your speed down and drive safely. The crested serpent eagle is a national special natural monument, so if you do hit one, be sure to contact the rental company and the police.
Check the tide table
If you’ll snorkel or swim at Yonehara Beach or Sukuji Beach, check the tide table. At low tide there’s a risk of injury from touching coral, and high tide is deeper and easier to swim in. You can easily check on the Japan Meteorological Agency site or the tourism association page.
Recommended Classes for the One-Day Drive
| People | Recommended class | Daily rate guide |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Kei car (S class) | ¥4,000–6,000 |
| 3–4 | Compact car to SUV | ¥6,000–10,000 |
| 5–7 | Minivan (hybrid) | ¥12,000–16,000 |
| VIP / anniversary | Alphard | From ¥16,000 |
With Ishigaki Mirais Rent-a-Car, all classes are available, so you can choose by party size and luggage volume. Choosing a hybrid saves on gas too, keeping fuel costs down even on a 120 km daily drive. Considering carrying snorkeling gear and wet swimsuits, a roomy-cargo SUV is practical too.
Recommended Points by Scenario
Couples / married trips
A casual drive in a kei car is recommended. Enjoy a romantic drive with the sunset at Uganzaki or the scenery of Kabira Bay. For an anniversary, a step-up trip in an Alphard too. At night, a dinner at an Ishigaki-beef specialty shop in town is recommended.
Family (3–5 people)
For families, a compact car to SUV is comfortable. Snorkeling at Yonehara Beach, the playgrounds at Banna Park, and the Kabira Bay glass boat are hugely popular with kids. Don’t forget to book a child seat in advance. With small children, an arrangement that skips Hirakubozaki to allow more stay time is also recommended.
Friend group (6–7 people)
Traveling together in one minivan lets you share gas and parking—economical. Deciding a “non-drinking” designated driver and enjoying Ishigaki beef and awamori at night is one way to enjoy it. The lively in-car drive itself is also a joy of a group trip.

FAQ on the One-Day Drive
Can I do it with kids?
Yes—with plenty of breaks and a 30-minute stay at each spot, you can tour it fine. Yonehara Beach, Kabira Bay and Banna Park are especially popular with families. For small children who need a stroller, a compact car or larger has cargo room to spare and is comfortable. Matching nap time to travel time lets children pass the time without stress.
What about for couples?
Enjoy a romantic drive with the sunset at Uganzaki or the scenery of Kabira Bay. For an anniversary, a visit to Tomisaki Kannondo is also recommended. Some couples do a surprise proposal over the evening dinner.
What if I’m not confident driving?
A kei car is easy to maneuver. Slow down on the northern mountain roads and drive safely. Navigation is standard, but using it alongside smartphone navigation is also recommended. Anxious at first, you’ll find it’s a surprisingly easy island to drive, with mostly single-lane-each-way roads.
If I can tour all this in a day, what about day 2?
For day 2, remote-island sightseeing from the Ishigaki Port Remote-Island Terminal to Taketomi Island or Iriomote Island is recommended. You can enjoy the Yaeyama islands on a day trip. A Phantom Island tour also makes an unforgettable experience.
Can I tour on a rainy day?
Yes—centering on indoor spots, you can enjoy a full day. Switch to a plan combining the Ishigaki Limestone Cave, Ishigaki Yaima Village, and sightseeing and shopping at Euglena Mall.
What’s different between summer and winter?
Summer (May–October) is best for snorkeling and swimming. Winter (November–March) is comfortable at around 20°C, ideal for a sightseeing-centered drive. The sea is beautiful in winter if it’s sunny, but the water is around 20°C, so a wetsuit is essential. Winter has fewer tourists—a season to enjoy at leisure.
